Lillehammer is an important venue for various events in Norway. The Birkebeiner events, which take place on skis, foot or even bike, gather tens of thousands of participants every year. In addition, Lillehammer is the venue for World Cup ski jumping competitions, while alpine ski competitions take place at nearby Kvitfjell. Beitostølen organises the opening World Cup competition in Nordic skiing every year.
